As I was buying my coffee in Whole Foods this morning, I was struck by a beautiful glass container filled with these tasty treats. Being a “certified” member of Chocoholics Anonymous, I couldn’t help but buy one. But before I take my first bite, we need to ask:

“Will my indulgence be healthy?” What are these hard to pronounce exotic Macbubls or (Mac-Bubble) from New Orleans LA, a city already known for its over the top high calorie foods?

“Will my indulgence be healthy?” What are these hard to pronounce exotic Macbubls or (Mac-Bubble) from New Orleans LA, a city already known for its over the top high calorie foods?

IngredientsFirst let’s start with the ingredients list. We have egg whites and almond flour as the first two ingredients, both healthy. So far so good! Things start to go downhill with the third and fourth ingredients: sugar and powdered sugar. (You mean, the kind used on the famous NOLA donuts?) We are digressing here.

nutrition factsHowever, when we look at the Nutrition Facts label, the added sugar is only 8 grams which translates into two teaspoons. By comparison, two Reese’s peanut butter cups have 16 grams of added sugar, 4 teaspoons. Two peanut butter cups weigh 1.2 ounces, compared to this larger single treat which is ¾ of an ounce. We use two cups to compare because this is how the Reese’s are packaged and who would eat only one as a serving?

Other good features of the Macbubl are that it has only 1.5 grams of saturated fat, the kind of fat which is unhealthy for our hearts. Secondly, it packs 2 grams of fiber from the almond flour. There are no artificial additives or high fructose corn syrup which is also a plus.

In conclusion we say go ahead and enjoy. We did and we must say, the Macbuble is really delicious, totally worthy of its New Orleans heritage! BUT, since the calories are high (200 kcal per Macbubl), we advise splitting it with a friend or with the Barista if all else fails.
